Sea Transport :

Water transport

At present, the sphere of water transport, supervised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, has 3 main operators.

The most important ports are: Ungheni (407 km from the Prut's estuary), Bender (228 km from the Dniester's estuary) and Ribnitsa (434 km from the Dniester's estuary).

The total length of internal navigable ways is 1,356 km, including the river Prut – 716 km and the river Dniester – 640 km. For vessels with a total loading capacity of 249 tons, the navigable section on the river Prut is 556 km and on the Dniester is 324 km. The navigable section with guaranteed depth is 40 km on the river Prut and 324 on the Dniester.

In comparison with other types of internal transportation (railway and road), water transport has a number of advantages from the point of view of normative investment costs and ecology.
At present, the water transport share in the total volume of goods and passenger transportation is insignificant.

The completion of construction of the terminal for petroleum and other products in Giurgiulesti will create opportunities for international development of transportation of these products on rivers and by the sea.
